The Inaugural 1 Day for the K.I.A. Team

The Inaugural 1 Day for the K.I.A. Team

1 Day for the K.I.A.'s inaugural year proved to be a solid launching ground in our mission to commemorate our nation's fallen service members. In addition to raising over $13,600 in scholarship funds, we were able to raise an enormous amount of awareness around the Ohio State campus and Columbus area by hosting memorial events, local media features, and creating commemorative merchandise.

The 1 Day for the K.I.A. 24 Hour Endurance Run

Through the 24 Hour Endurance Run, we were able to raise over $13,000 for the children, siblings, and spouses of fallen military service members to attend The Ohio State University. Thanks to the hard work of our team, the generous contributions of others, and the support of sponsors, we were able to attribute 100% of the funds raised through the run to the scholarship fund. This scholarship will be awarded in the spring of the 2015 school year.

In all, our race had 49 runners, some organized into 3 and 4 person relay teams. Collectively, our runners ran over 1,800 miles, averaging over 30 miles per person. Most impressively, our 1st place individual runner, Matthew Garrod, covered over 116 miles. Our 1st place three and four person relay teams covered over 123 miles and 139 miles, respectively (Team RWB3 and Team America GMC).

1 Day for the K.I.A. Virtual Runners

1DK was proud to offer a Virtual Runner option which allowed people from all over the world to participate in our cause. Our Virtual Runners were provided with a Race Day T-shirt, POW/MIA/KIA bracelet, and bib. While our runners were participating in the 24 Hour Endurance Run, they were asked to go for a run - didn't matter how far or how long - while wearing our gear! After their run, they sent in a "selfie" with details of which fallen service member they ran in memory of. To check out all of our Virtual Runners, and who they ran for, click here!

1 Day for the K.I.A. Awareness Events

Throughout the school year, 1DK was also able to raise awareness through small and medium sized awareness events. We were honored to be the driving force behind organizing the OSU Military Appreciation Wrestling Meet which recognized Niola and Jermain Mendoza, brothers of OSU alumni, Major Ray Mendoza. We were also very excited to play an integral role in the memorial ceremony of Col. Francis J. McGouldrick, former OSU AFROTC Instructor.
